  • Green Day - Health, Wellness, and Green Space - April 17

    Dear Families,

At New York City Public Schools, our job is to nurture the next generation— and that includes caring for the environment around us. We are proud to be part of the citywide commitment to keep our communities clean, green, and safe for our children. NYCPS will be hosting events throughout April to celebrate Earth Day, and on Wednesday, April 17, every school will take part in Climate Action Day, with the theme of “Health, Wellness, and Green Space.” Schools will plan activities to promote outdoor learning and care for green spaces.

I want to encourage you to engage with your child about climate change and how we can all do our part to be part of the solution. Here are a few ways you can support the work of Climate Action Day:

1 Learn more about Climate Action Days at on.nyc.gov/psClimateActionDays.

2 Ask your child’s school about their plans for Climate Action Day. (School-based Sustainability Coordinators organize climate-related activities; to identify yours, contact your principal.)

3 Reinforce the importance of caring for our planet and our communities. Here are some ideas:

    • Ask your child’s school if they have an indoor or outdoor garden that you can visit
    or help maintain.

    • Support Plastic Free Lunch Days at your child’s school, which are held once every three weeks in elementary schools. If your child brings food from home, use reusable containers, paper bags, or aluminum foil instead of plastic bags or wrap.

    • Encourage your child to enjoy our plant-powered meals, offered as a daily choice on our lunch menus.

    • Care for a nearby street tree bed or rain garden. To learn more, visit nycgovparks.org/trees/tree-care and nyc.gov/raingardens.

    • Find Earth Day events at nycgovparks.org/events/earth_and_arbor_days.

By working together, we can build a brighter, more sustainable future. Thank you for being our partners and for all you do to support our children!

    Soaring high,
    David C. Banks, Chancellor

  • School Survey - Your School. Your Child. Your Voice.

Every year, we ask all families, teachers, and staff in grades 3-K through 12, and students in grades 6-12 to take the NYC School Survey. The survey gives school leaders a better understanding of what members of their school community think about their school. The information collected by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn.

The deadline to take the 2024 NYC School Survey has been extended to April 19.

Families (Schools): Please enter a lowercase f followed by your student's OSIS number-- for example, f123456789.

  • New Assistant Principal

    Dear PS 295 Community,

I hope that everyone was able to take advantage of the Mid-Winter Recess to connect with your children and family in ways that may not always be possible during the regular school year. Just before the break, we celebrated the 100th day of school. For many students, particularly in the lower grades, it is an important landmark in the year that serves as a reminder of just how far we have all come since September.

September of 2023 brought the introduction of Ms. Jeannette Echeverri, who joined the PS 295 community as the interim acting assistant principal. Since then, she has been an instrumental part of the school community. You would have seen her at the - whether helping to organize the Holiday Parranda celebration she brought the idea to PS 295. You may have engaged with her while she was taking part in a PTA meeting or Cafe Conmigo. You may even have seen her at the Winter performance of Peter Pan. I am happy to announce the appointment of Ms. Echeverri as assistant principal of PS 295.

I take joy in sharing a letter with you that she has written to the community. Please see her message to the community below.

    Sincerely,

    Valerie Vanderpuije
