Cupcake Friday– May 26th

We only have two Cupcake Fridays left until the end of the year. Lets make these last two the BIGGEST! Cupcake tables will be out on the courtyard on Friday May 26th to kick off our Memorial Day weekend with a sweet treat. Bake and bring your cupcakes (or other easily portioned-out goodies) to the main office in the morning or straight to the cupcake tables at dismissal time. Can you help sell cupcakes? Great! The more people helping, the faster we sell. Email ryanmjgoldberg@gmail.com if you can help. See you this Friday!

Afterschool Band End-of-Year Performance 5/31

The BQCM After-School Band Program will be ending on May 31st with a performance. The students will be having their last class as a rehearsal and the performance for parents will be held in the auditorium immediately afterwards. Parents will be admitted to the auditorium starting at 3:45 pm. All students must return their instruments that day so they can be sent back on Thursday June 1st.

Dance Shares, May 24th and 25th

We look forward to seeing you all at our Dance Share this year. Our “informant” Dance Shares will give you an inside look at classroom techniques and an overview of the Language of Dance. These Dance Shares are all about the creativity of your children, their vision and their experience as a choreographer.

Our students have been working with Erica Essner, who is the Artistic Director of Erica Essner Performance Co-Op and a Teaching Artist for Arts Connection and Center for the Arts Education.

In order to reduce audience size, we have chosen to have two Dance Shares. Although all students will be attending both performances, we are asking that parents only attend that day on which their child’s class is performing.

  • Grades Pre-K-2 will perform on Wednesday May 24th from 9:00-10:30 am in the courtyard

  • Grades 3-5 will perform on Thursday May 25th from 9:00-10:30 am in the courtyard.

  • Students will be performing by individual class and will go in grade order

Clothing: All students have been asked to wear white t-shirts and black leggings or pants,  no shorts and sneakers. Grades Pre-K -2 should bring their t-shirts in by Friday May 12th so students will have time to decorate them before the share.

Field Day May 19th

Field Day has always been a community building activity.  This year we will be having Field Day on Friday May 19th. Field Day will include grades K – 5. All classes will travel by bus to the park and prepare for a day of fun-filled activities.  The location is Prospect Park near the Picnic House.  The Picnic House entrance is on Prospect Park West at 3rd Street near the Litchfield Villa. Buses with the students and staff will be leaving our school at 9:30 a.m.

We are expecting a day of fun-full activities.  Parents are encouraged to meet us at the Park.  Watch and cheer on your children as they participate in the games. Student t-shirts will be distributed on the morning of Field Day.  Sneaker should also be worn for safety reasons. All children need to have a signed permission slip.  Permission slips have gone home already.  Please check your child’s school bag.  PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD’S SLIP IS RETURNED TO THE TEACHER BY MONDAY MAY 15th.

Science Fair– June 16th, 5-6PM

PS 295 is hosting its Science Fair on Tuesday June 16th at 5:00 PM.  Our students are anxious to share their experiments and discoveries.  The Science Fair will be held in the gym from 5:00 to 6:00. The projects will remain on display for the next day so that classes will get a chance to visit the projects.

Spring Arts Festival– Friday, June 9th

A beautiful showcase of student art, curated by our very own Ms. Shen, will be presented Friday, June 9 from 5-8pm. Come see your child’s art! This free event will also have music, food, open mic, henna, art projects, sewing, games and our annual Toy Raffle with Super Soakers!

  • We need volunteers. We need people for all shifts in the food area, toy raffle, art projects and games in the courtyard. The shifts are one hour each: 5-6 pm; 6-7 pm; 7-8 pm; set up at 4pm; clean up at 8pm.

    • 3pm - finishing touches for art gallery. Ms. Shen and anyone else who would like to help

    • 4-5pm - set up for food, games, art projects, dj, face painting, henna, sewing

    • 5-8pm - event

    • 8-9 – cleanup

  • Carolyn Stirling has graciously offered to handle all things food related, but she will need parents to work the food area during the event.  As of now we are thinking of doing a bbq — hotdogs and veggie dogs.  I’m asking for any family that is able to bring a side dish to share.

  • We need someone to DJ or manage an iPod playlist, and/or supervise the open mic area (including set up with a speaker system we have in-house.)

Author Visit May 11th

The picture book, Qualities, takes you on an adventure with little Lee as she explores the animal kingdom with the help of her grandmother, who weaves in the message of self-discovery. Confidence and self-esteem are just some of the values emphasized in Qualities. Through vivid graphic images, collage & original fine art, little Lee’s journey is one that will resonate with all children and the loving families that guide their paths. Qualities is a different approach into the world of living things to uncover that everyone has special values. In line with the First lady’s anti-bullying message, Qualities equips children with decision-making knowledge for issues that will cross their paths. Ambre’s Qualities Confidence Campaign is committed to reaching children across the globe in order to empower and teach them self-esteem. http://www.artworkbyambre.com/childrens-book

Books are $10. Buy two for $15. Please see order form with this issue of the bulletin. Students will receive an autographed copy of the book after the visit.

Dance Shares May 24, 25

A note from Principal Mazza: We are looking forward to seeing our students perform at our upcoming Dance Shares in May. In the past, we’ve had Dance Festivals that were more geared towards learning specific creative moves and teacher-choreographed dances. This year, we were open to trying a different format where process supersedes product. Our students have been working with Erica Essner, who is the Artistic Director of Erica Essner Performance Co- Op and a Teaching Artist for Arts Connection and Center for the Arts Education. Please see her letter below:

Exploration in Choreography Informance Dance Share
Dear Parents:
PS 295 dancers are working hard to create beautiful dances based on the theme of Spring. I wanted to take a moment to let you know more about what we will be sharing as part of the dance share.
Our residency is all about learning the basic elements of choreography. Also how to be a performer, how to collaborate and make a dance and how to analyze a dance. The students are learning a symbol system called the Language of Dance alphabet. They are learning to read, write and create dance scores using the Language of Dance and they are having a lot of fun doing it.
Our informance Dance Shares will give you an inside look at our classroom techniques and an overview of the Language of Dance. These Dance Shares are all about the creativity of your children, their vision and their experience as a choreographer.

Best,
Erica Essner
